Stand Alone is a young organisation supporting people of all ages who are experiencing family estrangement or disownment. We support those who have been cut off and those who walk away from their family or a key family member. This can include a parent, child, sibling or any other key family member.

We are currently delivering support services in London, Newcastle and Sheffield, and seeking to expand our scope across England.

Our research has affirmed the stigma, isolation and shame experienced by people estranged from their families. Our current support groups have enabled us to provide safe, non- judgmental spaces for people to come together and share their experiences and meet others in a similar position.

Estranged adults come from a broad range of backgrounds. Many are surviving hidden family abuse, some are facing family disownment due to LGBTQI+ rejection, while others are escaping forced marriage. A number are estranged from children due to divorce, marriage and re-marriage in their family.

We’re seeking qualified and experienced counsellors, with a strong interest in this client group, who wish to work with us to develop our therapeutic support services in their area.

Counsellors must have:

  • Experience of facilitating support groups with vulnerable clients (not group therapy).
  • Understanding of group dynamics and ability to create a safe, holding environment for beneficiaries.
  • Qualification in counselling/psychotherapy with an integrative or humanistic approach or occupational therapists with mental health experience.
  • Accreditation with a relevant professional body (BACP, UKCP etc.).
  • Strong local networks (in one of the geographical areas stated above) and the ability to advertise group to appropriate beneficiaries.
  • Some experience of working with groups of people impacted by estrangement OR a demonstrable understanding of the impact of family estrangement on
  • Access to a room to facilitate the group

The opportunity is for:

  • £200 for a 2-hour workshop on estrangement, 10 hours of outreach to advertise to participants.
  • Depending on the result of future funding applications, there is the potential for a four-year service level agreement to be offered.

To apply for this opportunity, please send a short 1 page written expression of interest to recruitment@standalone.org.uk by 5pm on 4th April.

Please use this expression of interest to describe how you meet the above criteria as well setting out how you would run a 2-hour therapeutic support group for estranged adults.

THIS OPPORTUNITY IS BEING OFFERED WITH A VIEW TO A FOUR-YEAR CONTRACT FACILITATING SUPPORT GROUPS FOR THIS CLIENT GROUP.
